Very good for the money March 26, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This set gives a really good picture and overall performs very well indeed. Easy to set up and works as a PC monitor as well. Just make sure to adjust the output of your graphics card to the native resolotion!
I did so want to like this TV ... March 9, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
This set has a great spec (HD support, dual HDMI, etc.) and a great modern look and the other reviews looked good, so I took the plunge. Unfortunately it has been a massive disappointment.
First of all the factory picture settings are hopeless for enjoyable viewing and some extensive adjustment is necessary, but then I found that the settings simply aren't saved 4 times out of 5 - once switched off (watch that carbon footprint!) the factory settings make a reappearance. This is where the flimsy and poorly laid out remote control started to annoy. It really feels cheap and nasty for a TV of this price and brand.
And now the biggest disappointment of all - I tried watching it in low light. I'm sure 90% of these sets will end up in bedrooms and people like me will want to watch them in bed with the lights off. So why then did Philips decide to stick a large green LED on the front of the unit? The LED is lit whenever when the unit is on, and serves no useful purpose whatsoever (it goes red when on standby which at least makes some sense). Unfortunately, so much light is produced that it distracts the viewer from the image on the screen when watching in a darkened room. Worse still, the screen on my unit was abysmal at handling black. There are even a regions of `bleed' (I don't know if there is a technical term to describe this) - much lighter areas at the top and bottom edges of the screen that are clearly visible in low light conditions or when a dark picture is being displayed. Maybe my unit was faulty or damaged? This problem is so obvious that I find it hard to believe that Philips would allow it to pass their quality control checks.
These points apart, the picture quality is quite sharp and the sound is good for a TV of this type and size ... but for another 20 you could do what I've done and order a 20" Sony Bravia (a fantastic price on Amazon)!
Thanks Amazon for saving the day with a great returns process.
Good picture and audio, well worth the money. December 9, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have had this TV for about a month now and really can't fault it in terms of picture and audio quality. In fact there is very little to criticise.
The unit itself is quite stylish, with a black glossy surround to the screen. The speakers are incorporated into a perforated panel long the bottom, but this blends in well and isn't really noticeable. For the best effect, mount the TV on the supplied stand, as this has a very classy (and heavy) glass base and provides the complete package.
Setting up is a simple affair, with the now standard auto tune and with it having a built-in Freeview tuner you will get the appropriate digital channels. I certainly found that this set picked up more channels than the previous one I had, so the tuner seems to be more `sensitive' than some. There are some default picture and audio settings, so at the press of a button on the remote you can quickly find one that suits you. If not, then there are numerous adjustments that can be made and saved as a `personal' default. There is also and option for the set to detect 4:3 or 16:9 display and switch automatically, or you can manually do this. The remote itself is bit lightweight but the layout of the buttons is fairly logical and easy to use. Some of the more obscure functions have symbols that aren't immediately obvious as to what they do, but a quick read through the manual will fill in the blanks.
In use the picture quality is very good and as long as you feed it a quality signal you won't have to worry about any blockiness. Colour and brightness are well controlled and generally the picture never gets to that washed out effect some sets display. The audio is very good for such a small TV and remains distortion free beyond a normal listening level. There is an option to have a `surround sound' effect but in use I found this not very effective.
The only criticism I have is that the menu structure can be confusing and is not that intuitive. If you have owned Philips products before in the A/V area then you are most probably familiar with this type of thing, as Philips have never been that good at designing easy to use menus. In the EPG for example you can page down through the channels but if you want to get back to BBC1 (in position 1) you can't do this in a single button press. For most of the basic stuff it is fine, and maybe I have been spoilt with having Sky+ and its EPG, but it is a minor annoyance at times.
It's worth four and a half stars, but as it has to be a whole number then four it has to be.
Is mine faulty or is it a bug? November 14, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this TV 3 months ago and I am generally pleased with it. Picture is very good from a distance (it is a bit noisy close up - that could be my signal strength tho). Sound is very good and clear. I have it in the bedroom quite high up compared to the bed. I had to buy a wall bracket to tilt the TV down a bit as the picture would appear too dark when you look at it from below (the viewing angle is set so that it's OK to look at the TV from the top but not from below). I've found 3 bugs on the set: 1- The EPG doesn't update correctly. On the Now and Next page, sometimes BBC1 will show a program for 8.00 to 8.30 whilst ITV1 will show a program for 6.00 to 6.30 (ie. the Now time is completely different between channels). 2- I have a DVD player connected to Ext4. When I first turn the TV on, if it is on Ext4 and I switch it back to DVB Tuner the screen becomes blue and the OSD displays 'Digital TV' but no sound or picture appears. I have to turn the TV off at the switch to fix the problem. This has happened 3 times in over 2 months use. 3- Sometimes when I switch channels on DVB, the sound goes away. I have to change channel again for the sound to come back.
Philips tells me that the set is faulty and that I need to send it back to Amazon who will forward it them. It seems to me that a firmware update could fix these. Has anyone had the same problems?
///// UPDATE \\\\\ I returned mine in the end because I couldn't get Philips to fix the problems. Thanks to Amazon's fantastic customer service. I found a few more bugs. When you turn the Teletext on it changes the picture settings to Multimedia and if the Teletext crashes (which it often does) then the picture settings are not restored. Also, when I connect a DivX player to the AV sockets on the side I get alternate dark and bright horizontal lines every cm across the screen. Finally, some settings disappear randomly (eg, Inc Surround reverts to Stereo). I now have a Sony KDL20S3020 and everything is working smoothly. Although it's 20" instead of 19" it doesn't look bigger because the bezel is a lot slimmer. Also, don't be fooled by the higher resolution of the Philips, the picture on the Sony is actually better So save yourself the bother and buy a Sony.
Good picture but tiny On Screen Display November 5, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have recently bought one of these, and on the whole I am very pleased with it. I decided to buy it in preference to the Samsung equivalent, because it has a mor powerful amplifier and my partner has poor hearing. Both the picture and sound quality are very good.
My only complaint is about the size of the OSD controls. I use this TV in my bedroom, where I am about 4m away from the screen. At that distance many of the controls are unreadable, and I have to move closer to the screen to make them out.
One of the frustrations of buying a TV, even in a store, is that they cannot demonstrate the Freeview functions like the IPG, or even the Freeview picture quality.
You may want to compare the OSD on different TVs with this one if you are going to be using it from more than 6 feet away.
