What pride-what colour November 15, 2008
I have to admit that although owning the 'Special' edition of this dvd, I've never sat through all episodes - until now. It was all quite dreary before, with decidedly muted colours and poor video quality. It really is quite a transformation, with clarity and colour that has long been missing. A worthwhile buy. ( I now understand why Mrs. Bennett had such contempt for Darcy!)

After two dreadful DVD releases (the first and the 10th anniversary edition) in which all of the warmth had been drained from the glorious original 16mm print as seen on TV and on VHS, the BBC and 2 Entertain have finally repented and this, one of television's most beloved series has been restored to its former beauty. In 2005 I foolishly bought the 10th Anniversary Edition as the cover art-work suggested that the problems with the original transfer had been corrected. Upon viewing it, I wrote to the head of BBC in Australia with the challenge that if she could find any of the colours on the packaging actually on the DVD, I would happily walk naked down a Melbourne street at peak hour. Luckily for the locals, none could be found, and the offending item was returned. Now I am delighted to say that the original warmth has been lovingly restored in the Blu-Ray edition. Yes, as previous reviewers have stated, it was not shot in HD, nor even in 35mm - just humble 16mm, and at times some of the long-shots are not entirely distinct - yet it is a small quibble, and this is well worth the purchase to be able to once again see this iconic series in the rich tapestry of colours in which it was originally made. Thank you BBC/2 Entertain for restoring a true gem.

I have not purchased or seen the new blue-ray version of this TV-series, and I don't think I need to either. I first saw it broadcasted in reprise a couple of years ago here in Norway, and later I have watched countless times the DVD I purchased. So I have actually becomed addicted to it because of it's charm and beauty, very much thanks to Jennifer Ehle's Elizabeth. I think she is absolutely shining, even though she is probably not quite similar to the Elizabeth described in the book. She must undoubtedly be too pretty, and maybe also somewhat too big compared to her sister Jane. But who cares about that. Also Mr.Darcy is very well played by Colin Firth, even though I think he could have shown even more of the man's pride.
But it is of course the story itself that really makes Pride and Prejudice so fascinating and popular. I have also read the book, and got the more complete picture of the story. And I think this is very useful in order to follow maybe especially the great change that goes on in Elizabeth's mind concerning Mr.Darcy, but also other sentiments. And the want of this is to me something that many such series and films suffer from. There should have been a narrator's voice in the background at certain stages telling a character's thoughts and feelings. It's not always possible to show this precisely only by facial expressions. And I don't think one for ex. should have made up a conversation between Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth in a scene where Mr.Bennet in the book is making his own thoughts over and repenting that he hadn't layd aside any money for his daughters.
Another little thing I have wondered about, is that Mr.Darcy in his famous letter to Elizabeth doesn't mention that he actually refused to give Mr. Wickham the vacant living,as he does in the book. Therefore it seems rather strange when he suggests that Mr.Wickham would have got his revenge by eloping with his own sister Georgiana. What should he get revenge for, if it wasn't for the living that Mr. Darcy wouldn't give him?
It's now nearly 15 years since this series of P.&P. was made, so maybe a new one will come soon. Then I would wish even more fidelity to the book, and that more of it was taken into play. I wouldn't mind if it would be twice as long as this last one. I think the great narration of the book should permit that without making it boring.

Well they've done it, my favourite costume drama is now available on Blu-Ray. There is a short feature on the disc which describes the new process of remastering the original 16mm film for Blu-ray (apparently the process for dealing with the edit points, has only very recently been devised). So what can I say? It has definitely all been worth it. Yes there is still some noise especially on the darker scenes, but overall the transformation is amazing, much more detail, edges much sharper, colours much much brighter and more natural and the overall image is less bleached out in parts than the DVD. Also Audio is now in DTS-HD. I say buy it you won't be diappointed...
Great Acting/ Story, BUT in High Definition????? October 18, 2008

So whats the image quality like? I always wonder why they make an old , non HD and non-special effect film or series into 1080p picture.It was clearly not filmed in HD and did not have true DTS sound. I will get this for my other half, As I have agonizingly sat through it entirely twice. But in High Definition 1080p/24 picture???
I doubt the picture and sound can be improved much more than the DVD version, I would be surprised if that is technically possible.
I always wonder how a person can review this without watching this.
My view so far is solely speculative.
On the positives.
It has great story line, and masterful English. Well written, very well directed and superbly acted. A rare gem for acting talent.
Designed for girls who wished you lived in the romantic era of the 19th Century.
All the pomp and "jolly good show" dialogue here. Makes you proud to be British I suppose. Book is Better I am told. A feat I could never do, as watching it drains 20 hours of life span, reading is out of the question for me.
