Amazon.co.uk Review Love him or hate him, it’s good to have Jack Bauer back on our screens. Played with sneer and menace by Kiefer Sutherland, the ruthless ex-Counter Terrorism Unit agent is the kind of guy you’re glad is on your side, and this time, 24: Redemption finds him facing up to demons of his own. Set between the sixth and seventh seasons of 24, Redemption transports Jack Bauer to Africa, and it doesn’t take long for trouble to flare up. His mission this time, only inevitably it gets more complex than this, is to get a group of orphans to the Embassy safely, even if it means putting his own freedom on the line. While 24: Redemption leaves some of the familiar cast of the show at home, it does have some impressive names joining Sutherland on this particular adventure. Robert Carlyle’s mysterious character for one is a fine addition, and getting Jon Voight into a villainous role is entirely to be encouraged. Most impressive of all though, 24: Redemption shows real signs of the franchise getting back on its feet, after the juddering, muddled sixth season, that left many wondering if the show had enjoyed its best days. Now? There’s a real thirst for season seven, and a hope that the extended break the show has enjoyed has been put to good use. Because nobody, nobody does this kind of edge-of-the-seat TV thriller better than the 24 team. --Jon Foster

Predictable December 14, 2008 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
I could just leave it there, because my title sums it up. I like 24 and my son likes it even more. So we settled down to watch this together as we normally do. OK I'll come clean - I kind of stopped watching after Season 3 but my lad is hooked.
For all of you saying how great this is, which bit was not totally predictable? I don't want to ruin the plot for those who haven't seen it yet so look away now if you don't want to know some of the plot elements.
Ok then, the bad guys were recruiting kids. Some of the kids at the US mission school (or whatever it was) went off when they shouldn't. Didn't you just KNOW that they would get swept up by the bad guys? And didn't you just KNOW that one would be left alive to save? And of course when Jack is in danger (like being tied up and tortured) you can't take it too seriously because you know he's going to get out of it. So his mate has got to be the fall guy because a good guy has to cop it and there were only two good guys! Wasn't that obvious? And of course at the end Jack had to choose between saving himself or saving the kids. Who are these scriptwriters? Do they think we are complete idiots?
I know something is good when the time passes quickly. And it's not so good when you start thinking "How long left?" Sorry, I know this will offend a few of you who are die-hard fans, but I am trying to be objective. If I thought it was good I'd say so. It wasn't - it was just utterly formulaic and hence utterly predictable.
WOW!!! December 7, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is just brillant. The version seen on SKY1 is nothing compared to this version, its 20 minutes longer (containing some really essential scenes) plus theres no adverts (not even a ticking clock) the prequel plays as one long movie with not a single interuption. Trust me when i say this "24 is the best show RIGHT NOW on TV" without a doubt. This DVD is brillant and is really something all 24 fans should have sitting on their shelves. It comes in a cardboard sleeve like motion picture DVDs, it contains some brillant special features including a "making off feature" which really complements the prequel with a great commentary that again all 24 fans will have to listen too, its brillant and Kiefer can really talk for England. Make sure you get this, its brillant.
better than sky version!! December 7, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Only one thing to be said about this dvd! buy it for the uncut version its much more like a 24 movie! brillant. Sky ruined this prequel with cuts and adverts and not sure the cheaper dvd of this is much better so def buy this version! and the extras are great :)
Jack is back! December 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Jack is back! any real 24 fan knows that fact alone is worth 5 stars in itself.
I'm sure you know the score by now: The story picks up sometime over a year after the events of season 6 and follows Jack over the course of 2 hrs of saving/ending lives in the African nation of Sengala.
Ok, so this isn't a full season of 24 and as such you can't approach it with the same level of expectation. As you watch this you'll realise just how brief 97 minutes can be: it isn't anywhere near long enough to pack in all the twists and turns of a full season but then i never really expected it to. This is for all those 24 fans who find themselves wondering "What happened when Jack was undercover with the Salazars?" or "What actually happened in China?" or "Where has Nina been for the last year?". Of course, it doesn't actually answer any of those questions but what Redemption does offer is an insight into what is going on between seasons so that by the time season 7 comes along you'll feel like you have at least a few of the answers to all those questions that you can't help but ask when you start a season.
Most crucially, in my opinion, Redemption re-affirms what is so great about 24. I found that by season 6 i was beginning to forget what i loved about Jack; sure, he's a killing machine - but there's more complexity to his character than first meets the eye and it's this complicated, inner turmoil that makes Jack even more of a hero. I had serious worries that Jack's personal demons would shape him into a colder man than the one we've seen so far but thankfully Redemption offers you a chance to see Jack as a calmer, softer and ultimately more likable character. This can only bode well for season 7.
I'd be lying if i said Redemption didn't have flaws. It's definately not a classic in it's own right but that's not the point and in the grand scheme of 24-ness this may well prove to be a vital part of a so-far utterly thrilling story.
If you love 24 you'll love this. If you don't love 24 then you won't. It's as simple as that!
