Amazon.co.uk Review You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --Robert Horton

What is this? January 4, 2009 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I thought Iron Man was horrible. As a fan of superheroes such as Batman, Superman and Spider-Man, I was actually looking forward to watching this film. When I saw it, it couldn't have been worse. The first half an hour was good, but towards the film went way over the top with stupid machines that puts on his suit, a ridiculous plot and altogether it was a horribly executed film. If there was 0 stars, I would give it to this.
I don't like iron man for a few reasons... January 3, 2009 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
People said Iron Man is brillent, now I not a big Iron Man fan so I waited for the DVD to come out in late 2008. I leaved at the 26 minute of the film. This was appluing and the worst comic book ever, in fact the worst film ever I have three reasons why I hated it.
Reason 1: SPOLIER(DON'T NOT READ IF YOU HAVN'T WATCHED IT) So the start how Iron Man became Iron Man was a explosien. Of course he didn't know it. Not the best ending and that stunt was big but not BANG. So the fairess wasn't good and that's the end of spolier.
Reason 2: The rating of 12 well without the first sex scene and I thought went a litle futher and some violence wasn't approchient. This should be 15 for moderate violence and some sexual nature. Even though it's a comic book.
The final reason: Well the acting and I don't recoinset that but it was silly and bad. It was a explosen that acted like a ice cream van coming. Bad acting and awful plot details to come and that's why I leaved to Watch Hellboy 2. So Iron Man was rubbish.
If you like bad singing you'll love Iron Man Hopefully there won't be a Iron Man 2 If there's is call it Iron Man 2: The rubbish superhero
Who'd have thought it? January 3, 2009 When I heard Robert Downey Jr had been cast as Iron Man I was intrigued. And I have to say he really pulls it off giving us one of the most refreshingly original takes on a 'superhero' yet. He has such an abundance of charisma on screen and he really looked to have buffed up for the role. He manages to embody geek, playboy, morally ambiguous businessman, action man and philanthropist in the right quantities. I also liked the political message of the film as it weaves in the war in Afghanistan, American foreign policy and the corrupt nature of the military-industrial machine, perhaps a brave stance to take. It seems to me that superhero movies in the 21st century are less about superheroes who are perfect role models and more about ordinary people put into extraordinary situations. Even Superman has struggled to find a place for himself up against Spiderman, Iron Man, Batman and the Fantastic 4. The message seems to be: it's up to us to play the cards we are dealt. Iron Man is an excellent example of a man who felt comfortable with his place in the world, his playboy lifestyle, his boy toys and suddenly gets confronted with the consequences of what his company does, sees what he would not be able to see on a report. He then decides to use his talents to change things when it might be easier not to - and that is surely the most valuable lesson any superhero can teach us? To stand up for what is right no matter what the personal cost? A cracking film...
Great film January 2, 2009 The latest jaunt from the Marvel universe is certainly a well built affair. It features a good combination of action and yakking and contains some very strong performances - not least from it's leads, Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow. The script is a step above the norm with a central character that does not suffer from a case of the `overly righteous' bug that seems to infect these people. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Iron Man is definitely one of the better Marvel efforts (i.e. a lot closer to Blade than Spiderman 3)... only problem is that for two hours I was bored to tears. Insanely bored. Chairman of the Bored. Everyone around me was having fun and enjoying the movie, I was thinking about how weird my trainers looked at a certain angle - I can't explain it. The film certainly has it's weak points and I definitely don't like the way it pandered to my liberal hypocrisies in booing militarism whilst applauding a man in a metal suit beating the crap out of people (we all know superheroes should be right-wingers and not finger waggers), but none of that has stopped me from enjoying this sort of film before. Maybe it's because the variety of superhero origin movies is actually quite limited, we all know that with great power comes great yadda yadda yadda and so on. Maybe it's because following the excellent Batman Begins makes the others just look a bit second rate. Maybe the time afforded to story development in Heroes has ruined all this? I really wanted to like this film and I can see why everyone else (and I mean everyone) did and, like E.T., I know that Iron Man is a good film, I just couldn't care less about it.
Completely and utterly Overhyped. December 29, 2008 When Iron Man was released on DVD, I had heard so much hype about it that I could not wait to rent it and view the film... ...I was let down completely. Robert Downey Jr, who I consider to be an immensely talented actor, seemed to have gone for role so far below him. The plot was generic, and boring, and bears some similarity (near the end fight scene) to that of the new Incredible Hulk movie, which I have to say is tonnes better. I felt that they only really touched the surface on RDJ's character and that of his female assistance, so much more character study could have been undergone. When I first saw the advertisement for Iron Man, the idea seemed a little lame and generic, and I have to agree, after viewing this film, that view remains intact.
HOWEVER, if you are an avid fan of Robert Downey Junior, go and watch 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' , it is by far RDJ's best perfomance on screen that I have seen so far.
