2 out of 5 stars good but not his best   January 1, 2009
Although BIG is a fairly funny DVD, its not one of lee evans' best. There seemed to have been many small one liners which were sometimes funny but not at all as good as his jokes in previous shows. Personally, i find lee much funnier when he re-enacts life situations with the use of funny voices, however in BIG there weren't as many. My advice to anyone who wants to see the best of lee evans is go and watch wired and wonderful, that is easily his best performance ever.

Overall, not too bad but only a 2 star rating

What can I say. Another fantastic tour from the legend that is Lee Evans. Watch this DVD at your own risk - you are guaranteed to laugh at everything that is said.

5 out of 5 stars You call that BIG?   December 30, 2008
Lee Evans is, in every sense, the biggest comedian out there. He holds all the important records, his gigs sell out months (sometimes a whole year) in advance, and can last something that can rival a Lord of the Rings film for length. And yet he retains an air of anonymity; not quite a full-blown celebrity. This is probably because he's a pure comedian; nothing more, nothing less. He hasn't used his comedy to propel himself into other areas (ie. Eddie Izzard) and nor has he used fame to leap-frog into comedy (Russell Brand). Lee Evans gets by on craft alone, and I have full respect for him for that.

With every passing DVD, his gigs grow in size, scope, and length, but the quality is maintained. In fact, if anything, he seems to get better all the time. The last show, XL, was sublime, crammed with laughs for over two hours, and is still funny after many repeat viewings.

When Big came out, I had a niggling feeling that Big would maybe be a step too far, that maybe it was all starting to get a bit much. I shouldn't have worried. Big is excellent, and I must've missed half the gig from laughing so much and blinking back tears.

So, is it his best? Erm...no, maybe. But it's a close thing. Trouble is, to say Big isn't as good as XL makes it sound as if it isn't good at all, but it is! Staggeringly good! If amazon ratings dealt in percentages, it would be a case of XL: 95% and Big: 92%. Everything you love about Lee Evans is there in spades, but is just a hair's breadth from that heady perfection XL has.

You may disagree. You may even think Big to be his best work yet. It's certainly in the top three. Needless to say, if you're denying yourself this, you're denying yourself some of the finest comedy since...well, his last one.

I've never been a massive Lee Evans fan but have seen his previous shows and thought they were funny. However, I did find this one quite dull. He still has all his energy and stage presence, but the humour just isn't there. I was relieved when (I thought) it was coming to an end after an hour...only to find out that it was just that half-time break and had to endure another hour! If only this DVD was as funny as he is sweaty. Boring :-(

4 out of 5 stars What else did you expect?   December 27, 2008
Having seen all of Lee's previous recorded stand-up, I knew that this year would be another 'safe' bet. Don't let the safe fool you though. You know what he's going to deliver, a fantastic 2 hour set with laughs from start to finish.

2 hours of stand-up itself is no easy feat. Quite how he can churn out such long shows at such a rate only he can answer, but the quality is all there. I don't think this is on the same level to the XL tour. The quality is the same, but I think the material is a little contrived - the last hour seems to be entirely focused on his wife - again - don't think this takes away from the quality.

I gave it four stars purely because I think the XL DVD is better. The material is more wide ranging - but don't let think that this isn't worth buying. Lee is a quality performer, and this is no exception.

My only criticism - and I wish someone would have the guts to tell him this - can we stop the singing at the end of each show, its a pointless waste of everyone's time. If you want to watch music - buy music, if you want watch comedy music - buy Tim Minchin's DVD.
